Abstract
As learners we develop complex relationships with school subjects which build on experiences both inside and outside the classroom. Beginning with a focus on the primary school years, and then moving on to secondary school and undergraduate learners, this paper will examine the role of classroom interaction patterns, gender and family discourses, and popular culture in the development of learner identities. In the case of mathematics, learner identities play a central role not just in terms of whether individuals see themselves as good or bad at mathematics, but also in terms of whether they feel that they “fit” into the world of the mathematics classroom, and what kinds of contributions they can make to it. Using a variety of data, the paper discusses how research can understand the nature of school trajectories and perhaps influence practice in ways which interrupt the development of negative dispositions towards mathematics.

Yvette Solomon
Yvette Solomon is Professor of Education at the Education and Social Research Institute, Manchester Metropolitan University. She researches primarily in the area of mathematics education, with a particular focus on learner identities and teacher professional development. Her book, Mathematical Literacy (2008), explores the social practice of mathematics, focussing on the experience of learners from primary school to undergraduate level and the development of identities of inclusion and exclusion. Her current research projects in this area include work with colleagues at Loughborough and Coventry Universities investigating the experience of mathematics undergraduates and the impact of interventions in the use of space and internship roles, and research on pre-service mathematics teacher education with colleagues at Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences, where she holds the position of Professor II in Mathematics Didactics. She also researches in the area of STEM education more generally, and is involved in a European-funded project on engineering for primary school students.
