The mastery of generic skills of undergraduate students in Finland
Generic skills have become a buzzword in higher education over the last decade or two. Both policy documents and research literature seem to assume that generic skills are important during higher education studies and later in working life. In my presentation, I understand generic skills as a broad set of higher-order thinking skills needed by 21st century citizens in all professional fields, such as communication, problem-solving and critical thinking skills. I will present the main findings of the KAPPAS project, in which we have investigated how well Finnish undergraduate students master generic skills and which background factors are related to these skills. I will also discuss the implications of our findings for teaching and learning in higher education.
